I know that THIS is probably the dummest question YET. On a Comdial j0816 cabinet, how do you know what extension is port 10 or 12? The phone system was programmed by somebody else (who assigned ext > phones) and that person went out of business!! Please help

It would be the first ext. on the system. You can intercom 10 and see who answers and that would be 10. It is usely the recpt. Hope this helps you

You are correct in that you can renumber extensions to different ports. I think if you hit zero that port 10 will ring. Or you could trace the wiring from the switch to see what cable port 10 is attached. Or if you have a punch down tool, pull the jumper off of port 10, and check to see what phone is dead. These are some hints. Good Luck.

All are good answers. If your phones have LCD's just push the speaker button. Port and extension assignment will appear.
