In Canada the we use 2 types of pair gains. 1 is called an AML (Added Main Line) we use this when there is not enough pairs in a prem. The signal is multiplexed and on one copper pair you will have 2 working numbers.
The 2nd is used for T-1's 2 pairs in 24 channels out.

Sometimes called Westel devices, the AML device takes a standard 56K voice circuit and time-division multiplexes it to two 28.8 voice quality lines. Usually used where facilities are few, such as rural areas. While they work fine for voice, modems are usually limited to a 19.2 connect, but more often 14.4 or less.
But that's AML, and you asked for Pair Gain. Pair Gain is a large company manufacturing many different devices. What are you trying to accomplish? That will get you a better reply.
