The way I set up my auto attendants is to have all references to "0" be mailbox 888. The reason for this is so that when people "0" out, and most everybody does these days, is to allow the attendant to be able to handle multiple calls.
I set mailbox 888 to "wait for ring" transfer and the "to" to whatever station I want to handle the call( usually 10). the number of rings to 4.
Since the operator should be in a class of service by itself, usually 7, and in that class of service I set the maximum number of calls allowed for box to usually 3 and also set the option to say position in line.
When all that is set, when somebody "0"s out the Vmail will hold the call, try to see if the extension is busy and if it is, will play the prompt "The operator is busy, you are number X in line." Th VM will keep trying this at least 3 times and defaults to taking a message.
Also I usually set Auto forward all messages to the attendants mailbox (10) with a time of 000.
Any Operator messages will be auto forwarded to that box and at the end of the message the VM will say the message was automatically forwarded from the Operator.
This allows the receptionist to have her own mailbox and personal greeting.
As far as the timers on the DSU the transfer recall timer should be set for about 30 seconds or a little higher to allow for some extensions that don't want blind transfer. Also if this is a DSU II with a software level of 4 or higher I always set the ringback on transfer setting to on as a lot of people do not use music on hold and the people do not hear anything when the auto-attendant xfers the call.
Hope this helps

2 Questions:
First you stated using Line Id. Are you talking about the Voice mail line Id that you put in the DSU programming?
Second you said that you put an extension number in the transfer box, does that extension have a mailbox in the Voice mail? If it does not it won't transfer.

The transfer field in a mail box can only have either an extension that is on the system, or X. X means that the VM will ring the extension that matches that mail box number(i.e. mail box 10, X= Ext 10). If you put a phone number in this box, you will most likely end up in voice mail limbo.

The best way to transfer out of the DSU/Debut is to have the lines as centrex.
Using a code for SLT centrex hook flash in the DSU you can then transfer the call out.
The info is in the manuals.

I am guessing, but it appears that you are using the auto-attendant part of the voice mail to answer your incoming lines then using a routing box to send it to a station but instaead of ringing that station you want it to call forward to an outside number?
To have the voice mail auto attendant transfer a call off premise from the DSU, the absoulute best way is to have your telco provide centrex service.
The main reason for this is that if you try and have the DSU/DEBUT do a call forward outside transfer, it will have to conference 2 lines together and drop out of the call.
You can do this but it is not reliable due to the fact you will have line losses from tying 2 lines together (DB loss from incoming call. DB loss thru the DSU. DB loss from outgoing call.) and with loop start lines not having reliable or if any disconnect supervision.
Using centrex, the Debut can do a single line tap (#04)this is the same as a hookflash, that will put the centrex call on hold, then the debut can dial the off premisis number (9,XXX,XXXX) pause a few seconds, do another #04 and then hang up.
This method of using centrex lines is reliable and since the call is switched back at the central office there is no drop in volume and frees up the lines for more incoming calls.
