Comdial FXII and Interchange auto attendant. Is there a setting I can change on the FXII to shorten the delay between the time the customer answers the phone and the call is actually connected? My customer answers the phone and starts talking but the caller misses the first couple of words seems like there is about a half second or more delay.

How does the call get to the customer? You mentioned voicemail, so I'm going to guess the call is being transferred to the user from auto attendant. Furthermore, I'm going to guess that voicemail is set to do a supervised transfer (either wait for answer, screen, or wait for ring). If that's the case, try changing the transfer type to Blind. This may also require that you program Call Forward RNA (in FXII Station Programming) to voicemail, if it's not already there.

Yes it is from auto attendant but it's already setup for blind transfer. It transfers to the station fine but they have to wait a second before they start talking or their caller misses the first couple of words. Example they answer the call and say hello this is Bob can I help you their customer may only hear can I help you.

Check in the FXII to make sure Quick Transfer is off at all voicemail ports. Also check the stations being transferred to. Just a hunch. Your problem sounds familiar, after you said "...can I help you." Did you do a search in the Comdial forum on this site?
