Here are some ideas on how to set up your VM to alert users of a new VM message to their cellphone without actually calling and ringing the phone.

Customer has VM tree with "Press 2 for an employee list and press 5 for an after hours emergency."

Pressing 2 and then dialing the appropriate extension (or dialing the extension during the main greeting) extends the call to their extension and if busy or no answer, it goes to extension's voice mail.

Pressing 5 sends it to a virtual mailbox, in this case I used 905. After the caller hangs up, the VM calls the cellphone. The cellphone rings and he answers the call, then he hears the prompt "Press 1 to listen to the message." If the cellphone doesn't answer, it goes into the phones VM and the user can call back to the office to get the message by dialing pressing # during the main greeting and then 905.

Now the tricky part was having his cellphone to alert him when someone left a message for his desk phone and not dial the cellphone directly and having it ring.

Cingular has a backdoor voice mail number that can be found in the address book. When dialing the number from a land line, you hear the prompt:

"Please dial the ten digit mailbox number of the person you are calling..."

You then hear "Please hold" followed by the person's cellphone greeting. Press 5 for cut through and then 1 to send the number you are calling from. Cut though paging has to be enabled.

The Comdial VM dialing string looks like:
18179999302L5,1,H

Thats the backdoor number, an 8 second pause, then 5, then 2 second pause, then 1, then 2 second pause, then hangup. Listening to the transaction with your butt set on the outgoing line helps you fine tune the string.

On his cellphone it appears as a text message.
