im sory i didnt explain myself better...

i know how to punch down wires, i have the proper tool. I just am not familiar with where each wire goes and why. Like there are blue and white wires running to the block. im assuming those are from the "main line" that goes to the "phone server". Then on top of that on the left side is where i punch in the lines that go to the actual phone. Im not sure what the right side punch down block is for.

One situation is this...

earlier i had to add another phone to the office. I traced the wire from the desk and it was sitting by the punchdown block not connected to anything. So i figured that i punch in the white/green and green wires to the left side of the block since those are the 2 wires that were terminated ont he other end. After doing that the phone just stayed stuck on "system starting up" or something similar. Based on that im assuming that i only gave power to the phone and its not realy connected to the phone system. Thats where me learning about what the other wires do on the pucndown block comes into play.

thnx

I would tread lightly. Not being familiar with a system can lead to major problems or damages. Contact a local certified vendor for help. There is even a section on this board to help you do that. incorrectly punching even two wires could cause a lot of problems.

Yes, be careful. Let's say you accidently cross-connect an incoming line and one of the system phone sets. System sets have low ring voltages, usually about 5 volts or so. Ringing coming from an outside line is 90 volts...so, that phone is fried.

Yep what they said. Especially on the tinker toy I mean Nitsuko systems. They don't tail out traditionally so you generally have to look at the inside to tell how the damn things are punched down...(I lawys thought this was a stupid way Nitsuko did this BTW).

If this is a Nitsuko system--as Coral Tech asks--"What system?". Do you have a manual for this system? Your topic is "basics of punching down wires." Welllllll---that is what I do on a Saturday with my Grandkids --I let them do the basics of punching down wires. They even have their own punch down tool and tool belt. They have learned to do it pretty good----but it's a far cry from knowing WHERE & WHAT to punch down. Especiall on a live system. Help us help you. Give us some information. If the system is a Nitsuko, this topic should be in the Nitsuko/Tie section. Also---when you make the correct connections with the correct wires/jumpers etc.---that doesn't mean the phone will do what you want it to do--so some programming might have to be done. If you are going to be the one to work on this system, I would suggest clicking on the "Manuals" link on this site and get a manual. I & my techs never work alone on a system unless we are familiar with it. If you don't have a manual, no wonder you are frustrated. Good Luck.

But if your dead set on doing it your self. The Lines come in from the Telco. and go into the CO line ports, the stations come from the Key unit to the phones. The wiring on a 50 pair block is usually wired the same, blue, orange, green, brown, slate. What or how you use the pairs depends on the system, in your case it's stations, that block will hold 12 or 8 stations all in a row. Depending on what system you have...I'm guessing it's an Onyx, DS1 modular type.

But to answer the thread title: basics of punching down wires?
Use the color code above and consult your installation manual for the station punch down locations. If your planning on cleaning up the closet, I would suggest hiring someone who's certified or has a lot of experience with your system and watch, learn what you can, most phone people will tell ya what their doing.
good luck on what ever you do.
