Looking for voip system for hotel . Currently have 150 rooms . I have no idea what they have there already. Would it be possible to have say a 10 port ata connected to their current system ? In that way there current billing system would continue to bill but the lines used would be voip rather than pstn. Any tips guys?

why would you want VOIP for a hotel? The expense alone would be pretty high, and there are no advantages to the customer in this application. VOIP main benefit is it's portability of equipment. This is not the case for a hotel. All of thier equipment would be static at all times.

Scatches head. VOIP in a hotel? IMHO the best thing you can do in a hotel, mind you this is MY opinion and experience as nothing beats a good PBX with analog phones in the rooms. Get a PBX with a PRI capability, caller ID on analog. This is so that people that have dialup for corporate VPN..yes some do not use high speed for this and an analog phone in the room allows for this or faxing from the room.

Why Voip in a hotel? wow ? Hotels make considerable profits from their telephone systems . Connecting the Hotel to voip lines will triple their income . And I thought I was a bit slow .......

Are you talking about sharing LD trunks between several hotels?? That's the only thing I can think of you may be trying to do.

Now that I re-read your post more carefully I see you are talking about replacing a current system with VOIP...got to go with everyone else, that's not what it's designed for. It's designed more for being an extention of an existing system. No one on this board is "slow", in the way you suggested, not a good way to get answers.

Will it? You should look at it again. Make sure you figure it equipment cost and more importantly Quality of Service! Your hotel is not making any money if it is constantly refunding people money because they could not get clear connections on outbound calls. Second, I think you might find that the income from calls made by hotel guests has drastically declined. This is due to the availability and low cost of cell phones. In the last 5 years, whenever I have stayed at a hotel, I tell them to make sure the LD is turned off. I don't need it. So your ROI on something like this might be very long term.

I think he may be confused on something. Mabe he thinks he can hook up and get outside dialtone through VOIP and get a savings. Unfortunately thats not how it works...yet. You still have to get connection via trunks or T1/PRI ect. Every VOIP system I have EVER seen..has what are called media gateways ie..these communicate with TDM..think of them as "voice channels" to the non-voip world. Voip has uses but for what you want to do there is little or no application for it as I see the way you want to implement it. Don't feel alone I have ripped out so many VOIP system in the last 5 years it would make your head spin as they do not work as well as they want you to believe...or shall I say cheaply. Usually in the phone business try and use the KISS method (Keep it simple stupid) .

As an installer of various services in hotels around the world. I can say that even in locations with Option 61s and 81s that are owned by the same corporation (i.e Starwood Hotels) we don't even do VoIP. Zane edited your message so not sure exactly what it said, but calling the group slow is not a good thing around here and won't help your cause. The guys are merely going to shoot it to you straight. VoIP does not belong in a hotel environment. We have done High Speed Installations for a few years as well as Telephone System and cabling for all sizes of hotels. Revenue on LD is down for everyone. Hotels made a shift a few years ago to redirect that revenue from LD to High Speed offerings. Though you often travel and see "free high speed" it is often included in the rate or added as an amenity. Starwood offers its clients an unlimited Internet and LD package for example. The days of charging enormous LD rates is over. Before you call us slow, be sure you understand the full details of VoIP and the way it actually works. It is efficient for a multi-location company trying to reduce its LD costs and this reduction comes from the LD between its own offices and size does not necessarily matter any more.

My suggestion, if you have a group trying to increase their LD net profit, is that you get a service like Vonage or even SBCs unlimted LD package. Setup ARS to route through the lines with unlimimted LD or the VoIP lines from Vonage or whomever.
