At our office we have a PROSTAR 816 that is wired to 5 stations. On the phone board we have two 66 blocks. On one of the 66 blocks, I've terminated all the pulls from the individual drops and on the top half of the other 66 block I have terminated eight of the available lines from the station jacks on the KSU. The bottom half is occupied by our four POTS lines, which are fed into the KSU. I bridge the two blocks with wire pairs so I can connect different drops to different station numbers and direct feed the fax line to one of the drops.
I recently did some rewiring and updated to Leviton quick plug jacks. I wired the jacks according to the color coding on the block with 3 pair Cat3 cable. Using a standard phone cord (the flat kind where the pairs are reversed), the phones do not operate. I must reverse the polarity of the lines on the 66 block in order for the phones to operate correctly. All wiring on the 66 blocks is done tip over ring, and the modular jacks that are plugged into the KSU are wired black, red, green, yellow as they are supposed to be.
Why must I reverse the polarity in order for the individual station phones to work correctly? Should I be using a data style cable for the phones instead of a flat cable?

Ok, so reversing the polarity is required?
How frightening is that, haha.
