Hello.

I was basically wondering if the SVMI-8 was a 3rd party system.

Samsung phone systems can be configured 100% via key phone. There is also a very nice PCMMC windows based software that will allow you to configure any settings. It even has an option to upload an excel file into the database.

The SVMI-8 System however can't really be configured via PCMMC software.

I don't believe there is even an equivalent PCMMC-for-voicemail software.

It uses Hyperterminal which is like 45 years old, can't use a mouse just the arrows and tab keys on your keyboard. It even needs a specialized cable to connect to a PC. Is it just me or does this seem

1. It used an obsolete backward interface.

2. Completely different from the way Samsung does things on the PBX side.

I'm thinking that maybe Samsung outsourced the voicemail to a 3rd company which had to meet certain specifications.

Does anyone else think this?

The SVMi is a very old ROM DOS based system that was aquired by Samsung several years ago. Although they did not design it they own the rights.

Samsung has never had a voicemail that was configured by pcmmc.And yes they apparently do "own" the SVMi series of voicemails including the source code.
The Cadence was outsourced as well as the Starmail and the Cadence came back and bit them in the rear.There has been talk of DTMF programming the SVMi series but it hasn't happened yet.

The cadence did do dtmf programming but I dont know why they removed that feature from the svmi series, probably because soon they will go to a web faced access but I may be dreaming.

Samsung had an agreement with the 3rd party people to buy 6,000 boards manufactured by someone in Taiwan I belive and then they could manufacture their own. The software came from Telecall I believe who was bought up by Nokia and closed down, now there is a strange acquisition.

From a software ability standpoint the Cadence was very versitile. From a hardware standpoint, it was crap. The hard drives were the cheapest Samsung could source and that came back to bite them in the ass. Many if not most of DC/DC power supplies died and the guys in Florida are the only ones fixing them other than the Samsung "authorized" turtles in Illinois that are overpriced.

The guys in Huntsville were doing a wonderful job of out of warranty repair but some monkey at Samsung with below even average management skill sent the work over to Illinois and they were horrible, pleasant but couldn't do the job.

A lot of the digital stuff can be repaired by Barclay in Riverside, CA and they do a good job. Check turn around time before you ship it, sometimes they are caught up and sometimes they are way behind but they will give you an honest answer.

Telkol is still in business they make the TVM line.

Funny I have several cadence still up and running and only had one that failed (probably due to install error) but the point being the same as before .... there is no such thing as a proprietary voicemail for a system that was not built by someone else. Not one manufacture including Nortel ever created there own, they have been designed by a third party and the rights sold to the approp company.

That said I still preffer in skin because of integration but I do sell several 3rd party makes and by far the inskin for samsung is the easiest one to program and use.
