any suggestions on using a Vista laptop ( no serial ports ) on a dsuII. I have a USB to serial conversion but dont know how to connect using COM port 1

Your usb to serial should be a male out. Get a rj45-db9f. Pin it 2-r 3-g 5-b and use a rollover cord.
