its been up and running over a week, still getting the same error. I'm going to take a router and just make sure the ISP hasnt switched static IP addresses around...

Nailed it down. The external IP address changed / was not what the ISP insisted it must be. They assured me it was what they said - a static IP. WRONG. "well it should work, its what we programmed for you".
So just another CG believing that exaulted screen, saying "its your equipment".
What i learned: dont trust CG when they give you an IP address to use. Confirm it for yourself. Use a router even if its on a static IP address and nothing else is connected except the phone system.

how does the crossover cable thing work, do you still try to connect to the IP that is in mmc 830?

yes, as long as your laptop you are using is in the same ip subnet range.
