Customer is running remote IP phones all on VPN, Intermittent poor audio or IP phone disconnecting and reconnecting. Tech support is saying try taking IP phones off VPN. Customer is against this option. Is there anything we can tweak on the network or system?

make sure that the phones are using the g.729a codec on MMC 831. This will ensure they are compressing the audio and taking as little bandwidth as possible.

(Note, I have also seen the doing the opposite ie changing to the G.711 codec have a positive effect. When you lose a packet, you lose more audio per packet if it compressed.)

Another consideration is that with 2 open connections to the internet is that you simply need more bandwidth. Latency is rarely an actual problem unless you are using a wireless internet connection or you are filling the pipe and queueing traffic. Consider adding a second source of bandwidth to the larger of the two sites. A simple DSL line can fix alot of these issues and costs about $30 a month and a router.

One of my customers experienced this and increased bandwidth, etc. only to find out that all his problems went away when he replaced his older 10/100 switch with a new HP gigabit switch.

VOIP is a different animal to trouble shoot.
