Yeah I did a hot cut 7400 looks like a pile of puke. Customers o.k. with it I'm not. Too many years and too much time to let it slide. Patch cords to patch panel to wiring block to cross connect to existing station cable, Alot of added expense and more points of possible failure. For most customers it's about who can make it work for less money, asthetics be damned. So I'm working on a middle of the road solution. If I find one you'll be the first to know.

Here is a method that we use Noisy, this may help you out. We prefer to buy the ICC telco patch panel, either 24 or 48 port. Mount it on a rack and then from there use a 25pair connected to the back of it and run the other end to a block and punch it down. Then from the system just use regular line cord patch to go from the system to the telco patch panel. This makes it a lot more neater and organized in my opinion. Then on the block side all you have to do is put jumpers from one to the other. Hope this helps you out.

That sounds a lot better than the 8-pin mod breakout cables, but since we are going for the best appearance, the Cat5 cords might look the best vs line cord patch cables.

The last (7200s) install we did with an Amp patch panel, Neat Patch, and 1'-2' cords actually had the IT guy there taking pictures to email to his buddies. That made us feel great.

After reworking the last 7400 ugly install I'll get some before and after pics.

Like the other poster here, the fact that the end user is 'fine with it' doesn't cut it. I know how cheap everyone is now and a 20-year customer will go with someone else to save $500, but I just can't look at a slob job and feel good about it.

As far as cabling jobs we have seen locally, about 9 out of 10 look like they are done by a chimp. Cabling contractors are forced to hire cheap, untrained labor and buy substandard wire these days in order to win any bids.

Sad times for professionals who give a damn.
