Last dumb question. I seem to remember NOT to hang d-rings from a rafter on a wood structure. My data path sucks and would like to. Is it generally acceptable?

On wood rafters I use a product from 3M called stak-its ,4 fingers will hold about 16 cables, if necessary use two rows or whatever ,and cut down to one row , they have nails in them to hammer into rafters.

If you want to get technical D-rings are only suppose to be for vertical wiring, but I have used them on rafters. Just make sure your space between them is not more then
2 1/2 ft.

I believe the reasoning behind J-Hooks, it gives the cable more surface to lay on. On a D-ring with multiple cables the weight would cause the cable to become bent around it.

I've used plastic pipe strapping with excellent results. It has the width of jhooks and you cut it to length! not to mention price!!

Try using 2 hole PVC pipe straps. I use 1" to 2" pvc straps works good. Straps are wide enough to give proper support to cat 5.

Either way, I would think J-Hooks would be cheaper for you in the long run.
