I just bought a network cable tester Fluke. I have gotten calls to go to customer sites and test cables. What do you charge. I was thinking about a flat rate plus my hourly rate. Any ideas thanks your help.

10 dollars a cable would not be unreasonable in addition to the hourly rate.

And if they want paper and a disk, double the testing and add the hourly for the shop time to do the printing, etc..

Which model did you purchase?

I'd build the cost for generating reports into the flat fee. If you're doing a test only job, it's pretty much a requirement that you provide written documentation.

Steve I bought a Fluke DTX 1200. I bought it on Ebay. I have been renting a tester from a local wholesaler, they were charging $150 per day.

Hey... remember there is a big difference between 'network or cablet testing' and 'certifying'... The pricing above is pretty fair... but if they need you to 'certify' a cable plant as category compliant... ie. CAT6.. then you need a tester that will do the full certification tests.... I charge $1000 just for CAT-6 certification and documentation... that is after the network or cable plant is tested... network testing tells you that the cable is installed with the right wiring scheme... and there are no breaks... certification gives you actual performance reporting.

This is a great area for 'marketing' your services... Any company that is pursuing or already has ISO9000 and above certifications... has to have their cable plant checked and certified annually... that is $1000 a year in recurring income from the customer...

Educate yourself, then educate them and your will increase profits!
