The only time you need to run plenum is when you are actually running cable in a return airway. That said, some will argue that you should always run plenum so you never have to guess at it. Others would say don't run it unless the GC says to.

I say check you city code as they may require it even if not in a plenum airway.

I have to laugh every time someone asks this question. It's one of the things that separates a professional from the trunk slammer.

If you are going to be installing wiring in buildings REQUIRED reading is the NEC and any local ammendments. Get yourself a copy of the NEC, read it, learn the articles pertaining to this work and then you will know. Ask the electrical inspector about any local ammendments.

Others would say don't run it unless the GC says to.

Yeah, right. That's the person I would want to ask. Why don't you ask the customer while you are at it.

Good info in BICIS NEWS {March/April} about cable and what insurance co.'s are calling fuel load. Old abandoned cable =PVC? Unless owner signs off we always use plenum. The info in BICSI talks about added jobs for us, removing all old and trace and label the good.

I would be careful with this. Even if the owner signs off and you do not use plenum where required you may be able to be held liable since the job was not completed to code, the inspector also may make you remove and re-cable if plenum is needed. I feel the right cable should be used for the right job and base my bid on that. I would not even give the customer the option ,if I lose the job because someone out bid me and will not do the job to code then that is not a customer worth having. Well at least in my option

No, it's really of no value. I will be glad to help you get rid of it. Just kidding!

It's actually worth a lot. In your area there should be dozens of recycling companies, some may actually come and pick it up. Just check the Yellow Pages under "scrap" or "recycling". It's trading at record highs right now and if you really have a thousand pounds of it, you will definitely walk away with quite a fist full of Benjamins in your hand. Don't ever throw copper in the dumpster; you are just handing the money over to someone else because they WILL fish it out.

Your right about sign off ,The BICSI article made me think about liability issues not just code spec.s. As for trashed cable, dumpsters gone, will look into recyle next big cleanout.I didn't know that scrap yard would take wire with covering on it,thought you had to burn it off or something.
