I once talked to a competitor of of my company regarding cable technology. The subject quickly turned to winning bids. He could not understand why our company always came way low for a bid in downtown jobs in which he lost. He said there company has the same expenses, the same cable and so on. I did not mention that my employer did not pay for office or storage space for cable because a friend of the owner loaned that space in a warehouse. But what he did not know, was the type of cable we were using. He said that all buildings in down town require plenum cable according to code even if it is not in the plenum.

I told him non of the cable we installed in the down town buildings are not plenum rated. He said no wonder why you guys are getting the bids. I was also disappointed that I had installed this cable when in fact, it was against code. I have not talked to the city about this to confirm if this in fact, true. Shows some companies will go out on a limb just to win the contract no matter what.

We use plenum everywhere. The cost of having non-P wire, storing it, rotating it, is too high anyway.

Really? ..... it is so much more expensive and adds nothing to the equation if it isn't needed so i find it well worth the savings to stock both.

Do you charge the customers for plenum rated cable when they don't need it or do you eat the cost?? ...either way it doesn't make sense to me.

I'm with you Upstate. If you follow the codes, you don't have to worry about covering your butt later, charging too much for cable or having to eat it..

I use very little Plenum. In over 30 years of business I have had two installations that required Plenum and one of them was was not a Plenum ceiling it was just the code enforcement throwing his weight around.

All of the commercial work I do has to be plenum above drop ceilings, in open warehouses I can run PVC. This is what the cities require...my own city is fairly strict. Residential I run PVC.

I run into very little plenum here , the last two I did where not plenum ceilings but the customers CG had specked it so we complied and priced it accordingly

I could see if you did mostly plenum it would make sense not to stock PVC , particularity if you have employees who might mix it up and run PVC in a plenum ceiling
