On the Greenlee 910's, we've never had to get them upstairs. If we did have to, the tree detaches from the base, so I guess we'd carry them or lift them in pieces.
Some of the distributors in my area have been asking us to return ANY empty spools for re-use.

I like reels better. Seems like they pull off smother. But must say we have had good luck with Blackbox box cable not binding up or tangling. Spelling edit.

Someone on Ebay is selling some Krypton Green colored single-reel racks for about $30.00
We bought a couple of them and they are pretty slick when you need to dispense just one or two reels and do it quick. It supports a 1000' reel of 25-pair pretty easily. Folds flat for easy stow away in your vehicle.
