How many techs still make data patch cords by hand because it looks neater vs factory patchs? I only use factory, and carry boxes of different lengths.---------John

KLD, you nailed it, Had a trouble call on job we did. Cat6, wall to patch panel, tested each run and left a box of patch cords for IT tech. He made his own, very tight and neat. Trouble with 1 pc, replaced his patch with factory, problem solved.Billed company for visit plus hr. Now if you take orginal cost of cords, plus time to make 100 ends {IT guy }, plus my visit, why bother with homemade? Besides your not supposed to be able to make cat6 ends according to last class I took.didn't mean to ramble--------John

Well you're not suppose to make them under 3 feet either but they sell them in 1 and 2 foot lengths. They can't be tested properly with a scanner under 3 feet if tested individually.

I buy them premade. Just not worth it to make my own.

I'd prefer factory, but the boss won't buy them. I hate the raw fingers after about 15 cables.

Parts of the 911 system are running on patch cords that I made (specific lengths requested.) I have +3 diopter reading glasses I wear when doing plugs so I can see close and clear. I test afterward and have about a 10% fail rate. I'll make a cord if it is that or having to go out to pick one up. Otherwise it is not cost effective.
