I work for a distributor out of Belton, MO. The Unicams are great, but highly overpriced, as are all Corning products.

I highly recommend the AFL Fast Connects.

They are a few dollars less than the Unicams and connect more quickly.

Including the cleave and the total installation, you are looking at about 30 sec to a minute for each termination.

Just to throw it out there, there are many other solutions you can go with: apoxi-polish works well and the connectors are extremely cheap!!

The only problem with these are the labor costs and the time it takes for termination.

AFL, HUBBELL AND LEVITON all have low cost connecors

Graybar has a few "Lucent Technologies" Mini fiber kits for around a xxx bucks. Had a big blow out sale few months ago to git rid of them. Neat, has everything you would need including pucks, cleave and 100xscope. Graybar mat #98291673 and/or Mfr. part num.108267279 This reg. a xxx.00 kit for xx.00!!!! I know they have one left in Jackson MS as of last week (today 2/19/07)
As far as the unicam, last fiber recert class I went to said the little glass insert in the unicam connector turns yellow with age...

I just looked on GraybarNet. They show them in the Austell GA Zone.

I've never used or seen one. I still vote for the Corning/Siecor.

Well, the most probable reason they are selling the Lucent termination kits so cheap is because nobody uses them anymore.

A lot of people also like to recommend Corning, because that is the only thing they know (since the Unicam) came out. But not many have stayed on top of what the other manufacturers have come out with that is comparable to the Unicams.

AFL Fast Connects are faster and cheaper than the Corning Unicams. There is no crimping involved with these, only stripping and cleaving and then pushing the fiber into the connector. Depending on how fast you are at cleaving and stripping, this connection can take as little as 30 seconds!!

The Fast Connectors are running around $x.xx for a MM and a little more for a SM.

The MM Fast Connector Tool Kit runs at $xxx. The kit includes: MM Cleaver, Instruction manual for SC and ST, Fiber strip/cleave template, marker pen, fiber stripper, kevlar scissors, fiber prep cleaning fluid, lint free cloth wipes, assembly video, and carrying case.

The SM/MM Fast connector tool kit is a little more expensive because they use their fusion splice cleaver in this kit. This is running at $xxxx and includes: CT-30A MM/SM universal cleaver and everything else that comes with the kit above.

AFL's connector is less expensive, saves money on labor and tests just as well as Corning products.

If anybody has any questions about availability or pricing on AFL or other materials, please send me a PM.

Please remember to keep prices out of the open forums.

Thank you.

Well, it hasn't translated into failed links in the 13+ years they've been in wide use.
