Do you crimp or glue? These new crimp systems from Panduit, the OptiCam system, sure looks like a winner if it performs as they claim. You can only use tight buffer but that is not an issue. I never had a huge problem with yield from the epoxy connectors. I just hate how long it takes. I've yet to use any of the modern crimp connectors. The only drawback to the OptiCam is the price but if it can terminate 12 strands in less than an hour it would save money on the back end.

I have seen the panduit and liked the idea of them but that was only in a panduit class setting. We use the leviton thread lock fiber terminations. The reason being that you can reuse them, not that I need to resuse them. I've used crimp and epoxy which are fine but you never know who is going to come in behind you and pull the ends out drop them on something or scratch the glass it just happens, and some places don't leave much for service loop so cutting off an entire end shorts ya. I will say the panduit rep had one end terminated to a short piece of fiber and he wrapped it around his fingers and pulled let us do it as well and you could put lot of force on it without it coming out of the connector. Enough were you would damage the fiber before the end coming off. But in this area most products being installed for fiber data or phone is leviton so the thread lock is what I am used to and I have never had any problems with them even after using the same end over a few times.

I did a job for Morgan Stanley - thousands of connectors, MM & SM - all Unicam (crimp). I/We were very happy with the results.

What was your yield rate? The Unicam is cheaper than the Opticam, I like that.

Do you mean failure rate? If you used the red light failures were very few and far between. If you mean productivity or time per connector I don't remember but it was pretty quick. We had a Corning rep come out and give us a demo and a lesson. Try for that, you'll see for yourself.

MN - I believe the Opticam can be reterminated 2 times. Another great feature. The only problem I can imagine woudl be how would you know how many times it has already been terminated? Does the light source bleed through the buffer perhaps while terminating? I really like the product demos on You Tube.

Sam, yield emans both, failure rate and connections per time measure. I like your idea of pitting sales reps against each other, I'll call Panduit, Levitron and Corning. I did this once before - left the previous reps sales literature scattered around for the next one to see and I got a complete "permanent" evaluation network switch for free.

We only use E/P for any fiber that we install. Our guys got pretty quick at installing the ends after we completed 5-6 plants with 4-8,000 ends in each plant. I figure on average that they install about 12 per 1.5 hours including cable prep and setup.

Epoxy / Polish.

We use AFL's products for fiber. We mainly use their Fast Connect line. Each fitting is reusable up to three times.
