So, for the 13th day in a row, we were pulling cable today. Got to two new boxes of white cat5e. Pulled about 20' of one before it bound up. I opened up the box and found a bag of 100 8p plugs, a cheapie 8p crimper and a data circuit tester (wiremap for catx, with an 8p8c jack and BNC plug), all NIB. I was stunned really - I've never seen anyone use a rabbit-pull box of cat5e for shipping other things.
After putting the box back together, I pulled about another 10' from the second box before it too snagged. I opened it up and the same items were inside.
These two boxes came inside a sealed cardboard shipping box and neither appeared to have been opened before today. Was this a packing error or some weird promotional offer?

Which brand of cable was it? I never heard of anything like that before.

Oh man, I found it: Genica I should have known by the horribly broken English on the cabler tester directions that this stuff was CCC (cheap China crap). I'm glad all of this wire is short runs on one floor... I know everyone likes a deal, but they (the company for which I work) have got to spec some better stuff than this. CM wire is practically useless in commercial work. Jack

I was gonna guess it was CCC. I hope your runs certify alright. I'd do yourself a favor and can that stuff when you can.

Kevin, most hotel owners don't spring for certification costs. This one may be different, but I'm not holding my breath.
Re: the ccc, I'd prefer to add it to my "retirement fund": a ton of scrap telecom cable. If copper ever hits $4.00/lb again, I'll be set for a while.
Back on topic, do you guys ever find odd things in boxes of wire? I'm always finding Sharpies, partial rolls of electrical tape, zip ties, lunch wrappers, and so on. Some of it I placed there, some of it seems to migrate on its own.

My guess is that some Chinese guy's conscience got to him for his boss selling that crap cable and was trying to make it right.
Wasn't there a little slip of paper sticking out of the box that said "This is your licky day!"?

There are several offshore suppliers who offer these "installation packages". They cost less than a box of real cable, but they are irresistible to a basic CG. Jack, my guess is that whomever was doing the shopping for materials didn't notice that the price included this stuff.

It is unlikely that the 'extras' were even declared. I disagree with leaving them anywhere they can be found. Why tempt someone to install junk. It isn't like it will stop a determined person, cause any such person to bear the full cost of their folly.
Wrap junk in a black bag and toss it in a smelly dumpster.

maybe some one was trying to steal some tools and the cable got shipped by accident. I heard in the news some kid opened a box of bannas at a grocery store and found 10 kilograms of cocaine in the banana box :dance:
