My question concerns the full pair scotchlok connectors-udw,u1r,u1b and u1y.I know the udw was used for splicing drop wire and the u1r is for 19 to 22 gauge solid copper[according to the catalog],but is commonly used for 20 gauge copper steel block wire. I can't figure out what the u1b[16 to 19 gauge copper]or the u1y[19 to 22 gauge copper wire bridging]are used for. Is the u1b used for splicing 16 gauge program pairs in composite cable? The u1y used for bridging party line conductors? Only the udw connector is listed in the latest 3M catalog I have. Are the others discontinued? It's interesting to note that the u1r connector is used by the Signal Corps as a method for splicing WD-1 and WD-1a field wire. This wire is a stranded conductor, about 22 gauge, consisting of four copper strands and three steel strands.

It was my understanding that their full-pair connectors were primarily for maintenance/repair use only where sufficient slack wasn't available. I think your concept that they are most useful for splicing wires that are otherwise difficult to work with, like field wire.

I use the UDW connectors fairly regularly, but other than that, I only use 709 connectors for full-pair applications.

I've never heard of these...are they just an inline splice?
