I need some input on this.

I have been looking at this for some time and wonder if it is worth the investment.

https://www.flukenetworks.com/fnet/...nd+Probe/Features/Tone+Live+Networks.htm

I have always used split pairs when tracing down active data cables. No damage to the equipment or the network when I trace it.

But now that there is poe and voip, it makes it harder to do cable traces. From what I have read, this will do digital and analog without causing network problems.

My money, so I want to know I am going down the right path.

Thanks

mike

In my opinion it is great! Although sometimes the signal is so strong that it hard to isolate the cable you are looking for but the wiremap feature and smart analog tone feature have saved my behind many times. Look on ebay or Craig's list. See them there often or shop around.

I love mine, handy as pockets on a shirt. I have been very successful in tracking down active data cables with it. Like Velcro said though it is so strong it can sometimes be a bit tricky isolating one cable in a bundle, but with persistence it is very easy to do so most of the time.

I just picked up a fluke networks pro 3000 set. very loud tone, like the IntelliTone when you short the pair for a sec it changes tone...very nice little kit and pretty inexpensive.

Do either of the toners mentioned block out AC hum (60hz)? My friend has a toner that has a switch to block out most of the 60hz noise which is really handy when tracing wiring near unshielded power lines (eg romex, etc).

That was the exact one my friend let me borrow. Even with a broken tip it worked pretty good. I liked that I didn't have to hold the button down for it to work. One tap stays on, one tap to turn off.

This is as incorrect as RJ-45 jack/plugs. VoIP is a protocol. There is no cabling specification associated with it. The device may be PoE or have a proprietary injector, or even could be Cat6 though I have yet to see a Cat6 phone. Cat6 uses all the pairs and precludes PoE. Either way VoIP has nothing to do with it. So if you are hunting an open pair, figure out what network hardware you have and forget about VoIP.
