Up into an attic I use cable route marking flags, I just get them at the hardware store. The wire is hard just cut at an angle and drill up. Easy with drywall or tile, have to go slow with wood. Usually with wood I use an 18" 1/8" bit, small amount of spackel patches the hole.
Basements I've always used 16 penny finishing nails and counter set them. You could use the 1/8" bit and shove a flag wire through for easier visiblity.
The flags I use have 2ft of wire so will go past most all attic insulation.
Same principle Skip posted with the flag wire, but probably cheaper.

Thanks for all the input guys.
There was another vendor who bid the job in the low to mid $30K - the customer didn't tell me exact numbers.
So another one down the drain.

Of course.
I hope that a 3-week notice for something this size doesn't mean that you are just being shopped. A job this size says to me that the customer has known about this job for a lot longer time than that. If you manage to beat some unknown competition...
Looks like MNDAVE hit it on the head!

Might be a good idea to have asigned agreement ahead of time that a survey charge will be billed if you don't get the job. If the job is awarded to you, no charge. This isn't as important on small jobs, but on big or difficult ones it's almost a necessity! Weeds oout the bad ones (shoppers).

Yea guys I think what was happening is that the OTHER vendor was being shopped.
They still have not started working on it, adn may still not Monday.
I can't decide if I jsut don't know what I am doing or what. But the guy claims that te other vendor said that there is NO problem in getting it all done by the 14th.
Oh and it's 220 CABLES, to 70 locations plus 20 wireless access.
Most drops are about 50% were duals, 30% triples and the rest quads.
The house is 40 deep and 100 wide. it is devided into 5 sections. So each 40 x 20 has an average of 7 work stations. I don't think that that is all that unusual. the layout suggests that it was a building with 5 apartments and they converted it to office space.
the thing that gets me is that not a single box is cut in. ou have to create a pathway vertically and horizontally then fish all the drops. Could you see getting this all done in ELEVEN days - assuming you start working on Monday and work every day!?
I came up with material cost of about $18K. I know this is a public section and we don't want to list exact numbers, but how many guys and how many hours of labor would you figure?
The cable pulls seem

oops cable pulls seem the easiest part of this and that's in a baking attic with no floors.
Any way I will start a new thread in installers, because I would LOVE to see what kind of man power and hours wyou would put on this.

I think the 40K was very fair considering the labor, sweating, and short notice you were given. Don't feel too bad, the same crap happen to me last week. Did you ever follow up to see if they completed the project on time?

Charging a survey charge usually means we don't get to bid since we have dozens of desperate competitors just wanting to keep techs busy at any cost, including free this and free that ...
Normally what we expect is that we will spend hours pricing out and designing a job to be done in a professional manner, at a fair profit, and then the prospect shows that information to the cable guy hauling around cable in the back of his Camaro. "Can you beat this guy's price?"
Ah, the phone biz.
