Or, if it's a new install we'll install all Cat 5e or 6 and use patch panels.

I like to do 2 pair per jack so that they can handle anything you plug in. This assumes a business with a switch. I'd not do that for a small shop with say 4 line phones. There are still 2 pair systems being installed, such as the Partner ACS. It just covers all possibilities, analog and digital. And since 6c jacks are cheap, why not? You can always break out the pairs at the jack if you need to and you don't even have to pull the plate.

@nfc - That makes sense. What about 2 voice jacks at every location... wouldn't that jack up (pun intended ) the budget unnecessarily?

[/QUOTE] Panasonic digital phones use the black/yellow pair plus can run an analog port through the set on the red/green pair. Makes it a pain in the backside having to go through and reterminate all the jacks if it wasn't done originally.

I used to use a single pair for voice. Now I use two pairs just in case it's needed later & the jack is behind furniture.
To carry on with the numbering thing, why not leave space on the field for the 2nd group of 2 pairs for later add-ons?
Example: V-01, then V-03, V-05 etc. Then if you need to activate a new jack, it could be easily added in sequence like V-02. If you really get into a bind, with 2 jacks already at the same outlet, V-01, V-01A,-02, V-02A if you're using 1 pair per jack.

Tony-the Inter-Tel phones use pins 3 and 6 instead of 4 and 5...so usually I just wire up the jack with 2 pairs, or wire pair 2 on the second set of pins.

And there's other wierd wiring works: - IWATSU OMEGA III
- EAGLE ONE.
- SUN MOON STAR
- AND MORE
In a perfect world you won't run into these, however... The final decision is yours. ALSO any areas that are going to be inaccessible in the future due to: - HARDCAP
- PONYWALL
- ISLAND LOCATION
- ET CETERA
should automatically be wired with more than is originally needed because, in a perfect world... Dean

I would stay away from your original thought of numbering by room number and just go in sequence V1-whatever and D1-whatever. If you go the room number route, and you have 200 rooms done and labeled accordingly on the patch panel/66 blocks, what you gonna do when they come and say they want one more V/D drop in room 7?
