Okay, hyperterminal is set as explained above. after hitting the esc. key we appear to be connected. screen shows password>1, I can not type anything after password>1.
The only keys on the keyboard that work are esc. and the "F" keys. I have tried to hit ctrl D. but the keyboard does not seam to be working correctly. Any other suggestions?

Do you get the "disclaimer" followed by "Enter Password to select programming mode"?
If so, at this prompt, press ESC.
You'll then get "Enter password> ".
This is where you enter your password, for example, what ever is appropriate for Level 8, Level 1, etc.
Also, I've found that HyperTerminal doesn't work very well, it's better to use Procomm Plus or something that can emulate either the WYSE-50 or TVI-950 terminals.
