The Inter-Tel Axxess version 4.4 and above will do all you want with a T1/PRI 23 channels, DID numbers for eac department. Any 1 department could get upto 23 calls at the same time. Calls transfered between extensions only use 1 channel if both extensions on switch. If multiply locations you can network the the seperate buildings. No need for centrax and all numbers (by law now) are to be portable.

They would have to tie up one line and someone elses to do the trunk to trunk transfer.

But, would you really doing a trunk to trunk? Are they transfering offsite on just onsite?

That's exactly what I understood bill wanted to do. I'm not a whiz on T-1 or PRI or DID, but I know in the past hitting situations like this they either had to keep centrex or do it my way. Receptionist or VM transfers the call, sorry, all you prima donnas lose your personal lines, now you have a personal extention number. Deal with it.

with T1 or PRI they still have personal numbers
for all, with the added bonus of being able to receive more than 1 or 2 calls.

Thanks all,
I've given my input and they still insist on the dedicated numbers to each department. No PRI, no T1, no DID and no Centrex. I've explain it will not fit their needs so now the ball is in their court. So if anyone has anymore ideas please let me know. I'm to the point to just let them go with the other vendor, don't want my name on something that isn't going to do what they want.

It still sounds like centrex is the best solution for what your customer is trying to do. If they use the transfer feature of the centrex they don't tie up their department lines once the call is transferred. One thing I would change in the centrex if it is not alreay that way is that the departments that have 2 or more lines I would put them in a hunt group. Most LEC's will give special pricing on a centrex package that is sometimes cheaper than 1FB's. What does the customer not like about the centrex service? If they don't have a telephone system now they are tying up two external lines everytime they call another station in the centrex. At least with a new telephone system they would free up the CO lines for internal calls. You could sell a new system to compliment the centrex features.

I do not know of anything other than Centrex or PRI that will do what they want to do.
I love it when people do not want to hear that what they want to do is not possible given the restrictions thay are placing on it.
It sounds like you are right to walk away from this one.

nectec and paul144,
You have basically wrapped it up. The main reason they want a system is the internal calling issue. What you said is what I told them, use a system to enhance the Centrex not get rid of it. The other vendor here has told them this system will let them do internal transfer and be rid of the Centrex. So it's a matter if they want to believe him or me. I drafted a letter to send them, but I'm not mentioning specific remedies as I want to force a face to face with those making this decision, so far it's all through a third party. Again folks, thanks for all the great input.

On another note, the other vendor is going to look like a real moron when this does not work. You will look like a genius.

Better him than me. I've sent the letter, so I'm just waiting to see if they will let me present alternatives. The guy is a nice guy, but all he does is new installs on one system. He's told lots of people they need a new system, then I've fixed their existing system for them. Not wanting to put him down publicly though, I figure eventually the word will get out, this is a pretty rural area.
