Hello All,
I have a Jr. Tech who would like to advance faster. He found a certification program for a CPCT and wanted to know if it would be of any value. I have never heard of it, does anybody have any experience with the course or a tech that has received the training.
Can anybody recommend a good resource to get a beginning tech up to speed quick?
Thanks,
Andy

In many states a cabling tech is actually (or should be)a licensed low-voltage electrician. They have to undergo an apprenticeship program which includes Classroom time and documented hours working under a journeyman.

I am not sure what you are referring to with the CPCT , is it some sort of CBT (computer based learning)? Or is it a Vendor Specific certification that isn;t worth the paper it't written on (unless you have a contract that dictates all technicians must me certified on product X structured cabling program)

Doing a quick search tells me it used to be part of the Structured Cabling Association(SCA - https://www.scausa.org/) and now is handled though the Fiber Optic Association(FOA). I've only heard of FOA through a website called TechRepublic which mostly has information geared towards PC technicians.

On https://www.thefoa.org/cpct.html, they show a picture of a rack that really needs to be in the ugly work part of this site. I'm not sure how useful what they teach is, unless it is all mechanics and no aesthetics. Ties were used on the bundle along the wall as well and they were put on too tight -- Look at those bulges.

It seems they are claiming vendor neutral training/certification so maybe they are trying to become the CompTIA of wiring. If that is the case, then they are geared towards entry level technicians.

From https://www.scausa.org/ (Italics on their page as well)

The SCA now focuses on the technical high school or secondary school teaching IT or telecom courses. A free basic cabling curriculum is available for download for users wanting to teach cabling but not offering certification.

NOTE: High school or technical schools interested in teaching an introduction to premises cabling course should contact us regarding a free curriculum available for their courses. Email requests to <[email protected]> referencing the free SCA cabling curriculum.
I may try to get that though a NPO learning group I help out and see if it has any redeeming qualities.
