I installed a piece of 6 strand 62.5/125 pre terminated fiber about 6 months ago .The customer installed his switches and everything was fine .then they wanted to use another set of strands for another application and the other 4 strands dont seem to be working .This is an outside plant cable running between two buildings very simple straight shot .I was just curious if anyone had any ideas what it could be
other than the obvious

Thanks

JD

Pre termed fiber usually comes with a sleeve to protect everything during installation and of course you checked the fibers before and after the install? It could be as simple as no crossovers, too!

I would clean the ends real good. Then take a light source/power meter and shoot light down the suspect 4 strands. If you are getting light, then its not the fiber. If you get no light......then bad end or broken fiber.

"When you clean the fiber ends real good" make sure the alcohol you use is 99% . If by chance you use 70% alcohol when it dries it leaves a residue making poor or shoddy connections. Their is a big difference if you use 99% alcohol.
Your customer is probally patching the wrong strands . Test and Lable everything, that out side cable is pretty tough. :thumb:

As mentioned, 99% ,lint free paper and canned air.
If you get no light with a power meter see if you can get a hold of a laser pointer and shoot the beam down each strand, you will be able to see a break if it is near the panels or a splice box.
One other thing, shoot them from both ends with the laser, if all else fails you'll need an OTDR.

Depending on the age of the equipment. Make sure you have one of the patch cords swap. I went to a site once where 6 IT guys where blamming the fiber for being bad. I walked in swap a patch cable and things came right up. They had a transmit talking to a transmit and receive talking to receive. Now on newer equipment the equipment will do the switching.

Swap the working equipment over to the "non-working" strands, and see what happens

You should use be using the Corning Cable Systems Single-Fiber Port Cleaner or appropriate cleaner for the end you are working on if you decide that cleaning it is a priority.
