I am looking for input on best practices for terminating 50pr backbone cables on patch panels. I know many would suggest using 110 blocks instead, but so many customers want rack mount plug and play so they can just use patch cords everywhere. So with 48 port patch panels and 50pr cable, what do you do with the leftover 2 pr? Terminate on biscuit jacks, cut them off, leave coiled, ground to rack? Is there such a thing as a 50 port patch panel that is for punch down rather than RJ21?

They only go up to 48 ports and the next size is 64. I just coil up the violet/slate pair and forget about it.

Terminate the Vio/Slt on the 24th port, on the Orange punchdown (568-B). At least you can use the jack to extend a T1 if needed.

TTT, thats what we do as well it will be there if you need to extend the T1.

They do (or did) make 2 pair patch panels, but they also came 24 & 48 port. Some as I recall came with amphenol connectors on the back so you could plug in an RJ21X, some had 110 punch down for you to chop down the cable.

Well Ed, I know I'm getting old, but before I go down to the dreaded basement and go look for my old interface manual, wasnt an RJ-21X a 25 pair cable (with amphenol) that the Telco used to turn lines over to a CPE installation?

Have I forgotten my nomenclature completely?

yes, but in this instance it's not functioning as a demarcation point...so it's just a 25 pair connector

Sam, you are correct in your recollection.

What Ed is referring to (if I may intercede between old friends) is the fact that RJ designations are reserved for apparatus that interconnects the PSTN to CPE (only) and not for clever ways to interconnect other stuff.

So, a piece of internal apparatus on a customer's premises that can be plugged and unplugged, using a 25-pair Amphenol, is NOT an "RJ"-anything.

It's a slippery slope. Ed is afraid that without an intervention, you might be gradually going over to the dark side, and may even start saying things like "RJ-45" when you mean "8p8c", and "handset" when you mean "telephone."
