I have the above system and lately all sorts of static when on a call. I want to unplug the system to see if that will clear the problem will I lose any program information. All the handset cords and handsets have been replaced. This is on all phones. Thanks in advance AJAR

If it's not the handset cord or connection, I've often found it to be the reed switch under the plunger that the handset sits on. They can be purchased from sandman.com or you can send the sets out to be reconditioned. Static is a common problem and really can be caused by many things so you have to troubleshoot it to be sure, but the reed switch is a common failure. mark

If this is on all telephones and all lines in, then I doubt that this has anything to do with the telephones. It is unlikely that they would all develop the same problem at the same time. I would go to the KSU (the central unit) and make certain that all of the conections are firmly seated. Have you had this system for a while? Was anything done with the system between the last time that everything worked properly and now? Was the system moved in any way? Was anyone working in the area where the system is? Were any new electrical devices installed near the system that might be giving off electrical radiation and causing this? For instance, did you put in an air conditioner or any piece of equipment with an electrical motor or blower? My first guess would be that someone was working nearby and nudged a connection a little loose.

AJAR: I think you are on the right track with the TRK-4 card. A couple of things came to mind concerning the static. What enviorment is the system in? (Dusty warehouse exposed to temp flux and dust?) Check the 25pair tail that plugs into the KSU and make sure that your pins haven't gotten corrosion on them. Also, the TRK-4 has the self contained relays that just wear out but usually will show up on a line or two and not all COs. If you have a second TRK-4 or TRK-2 try swapping the cards and see if you can isolate the trouble to the card. You can move the TRK-2 to the 1st slot with no problems but will only pick up 2 CO Lines. Just a few thoughts if you dial tone is clean!

Its in a closet. Do you lose program info when the system is unplugged. I would imagine I have to unplug to remove trunk card.

You can "Hot Swap" TRK-4, TRK-2 or STA cards. You only have to power down to pull the CPU-4 or the Tone Card. If you power down, you will not lose anything in programming. I'm not sure what type of battery is in that system but I've had a system on the shelf for a year and pulled it out, fired it up and it retained all programming.

Before power down. Press the reset button on the CPU to lock any programming changes that have been done into the system memory.
Most of the time it is a bad relay in the trunk card, swapping them is a good testing method. If you are near the switch when calls are being processed you can hear the relay clicking. Some of the TRK cards had a cover over relay that could pop-off and use a barnishing tool to clean relay, or contact cleaner.
Good Luck!!
If all else fails, use a BFH.
