I know, hook up pairs until I can no longer call the extension number, but this unit is not connected to anything. I am hoping there is a physical indicator of sorts. A cryptic serial numbering scheme or an added board that will be obvious with the cover removed, etc.

There are spaces for up to four 4-port expansion cards in the system. Each one is connected to the mother board with a ribbon cable at the bottom. Just count the number of these cards to get your port count.
