Here's my problem. I have 2 NEC systems I'm trying to connect using Voip. I've done this several times so I'm fairly confident that the NEC systems are programmed right. I plugged the NICs on both sides directly into the smartjack of the DS1 circuits on both sides. No luck. I was told I dont need a router, but I'm wondering if I do. I d have IP addressing set up correctly, I've tried several cabling configs (e.g. crossover and straight through) and I've tried using my laptop instead of the IP cards. No luck. Any advice?

Yes, you need a router. The port on the smart jack is not ethernet.

Ok. What type of interface is it? I would guess that would be a question when I'm router shopping. Also, since I'm not routing between subnets, is there a less expensive "bridge" type device I could use instead?

Hello ncook,
The connection on the smartjack is a standard T-1, wired to RJ-48c specifications. Your ethernet patch cable fits the jack, but everything else about the connection is wrong.
You may be able to find a bridge with a T-1 interface. But, my guess is that you will be able to find a router for less money. Sure a router is more capable, but a bridge (with a T-1 interface) would be more specialized, and more expensive. Most routers that I have worked with can be configured as a bridge.

To be just a bit more specific, if you are in a cisco world the interface you are looking for is a WIC-T1

That depends on your routers interface. If you have a router with a serial interface, you would need a CSU/DSU. If you get a router with a T-1 interface it will likely have an intetgrated CSU/DSU. To use philpete's Cisco example, the appropriate part number would be WIC-1DSU-T1 (with integrated DSU). But, that is for the T-1 interface only (router not included).

Problem was solved today, I hooked up my routers and after days of going back and forth with the telco, they finally fixed their problem and it works now. Thanks for all the help.
