When I was with Bell before 82, we had a meeting one day about why our labor units were so bad (productivity reporting units). The supervisor told us we had to meet them. I asked about a job I had to do that morning. I was supposed to drive 40 miles and put up a piece of 25 pair self supporting cable across a creek way off the road. I was give 30 minutes to do the job (a computer generated time allotment). I asked how much time I would have total since I had someone else going with me. Kind of hard for one man to do a job like this. I was told the time would be 15 minutes for each man. I asked if that included driving time. Suprovisor said it did. So I asked if they realized how rediculous this was. It was going to take me 45 minutes just to drive to the job. We were told we needed to start using lost time tickets for anything that was not covered by a labor unit code. So we all grabbed a stack of these tickets and hit the road. That afternoon I turned in a stack of about 40 lost time tickets. My last lost time ticket said "30 minutes lost time for filling out lost time tickets". That was the last time the issue ever came up.

30 minutes? That's a bit generous. I guess you forgot to include the two splices that were to be included in that time alotment!

Man, I sure miss the days when as long as you did your paperwork right, you didn't have to do any real work. The poor fellow who could not figure the paperwork game out would work is but off and catch hell because his numbers didn't look good. Never be so busy working that you can't do your paperwork. I must have trimed enough imiginary trees to fill a national forest. That would be code R21 in BellSouth labor unit speak.
