Hi
I aquired a 1D2 payphone from work and am trying to convert it for use on a POTS line in my garage. I can get the dial tone but people cannot hear me. I have tried different handsets and presently have a new handset on the phone. It has a 60C keypad and a 32A network board. I can make these things work all day on a coin line but can't get it to work at home. If someone knows how to modify one of these to work on a POTS line, your help is greatly appreciated.

Mine worked right out of the box on a standard CO line. I know this is a bit of a stretch, but have you tried reversing polarity on the line?

Flipping tip and ring didn't change anything. I don't get any noise in the receiver when I blow into the transmitter. It's almost like the transmitter is dead. It does the same thing with different handsets.

Haven't worked on too many payphones, but I've had that issue on 500 & 2500 type sets. Try moving the handset leads on the block.

There is a post-pay option that doesn't cut the transmitter through until coins are deposited. I'll check the jumper options on mine to see how they are set for the pre-pay mode and check back.

There may also be a ground start-loop start option, I don't remember, but check for that. It must be loop start.

Thanks Ed. I didn't know about the post-pay option. I can fix a 5E or DMS10 switch with no problem but can't seem to figure out this phone.

Chris, I didn't find any option jumpers in mine. Let's double-check the handset cord connections. This is how they should be:
Green to terminal 4 Red to terminal 3 Black to terminal 6 Yellow to terminal 8
Also, it the main chassis in your phone a 32B? You might have a 1D2 phone housing that was retrofitted to be a COCOT.
Lastly, make sure that your incoming line is connected to terminals T and R. Sometimes, people use terminal L1 by mistake.
I hope that some of this helps. If not, let me know and I'll check other terminals for you to make sure that all of the other wires are in the proper places.

Hi Ed
When I connect my handset on the terminals you told me, the transmitter will not work. In order for it to kind-of work, I have to move the green wire from terminal 4 to terminal 7. This makes it work a bit but people tell me I am really quiet and it is hard to hear me.
The chassis in my phone is a 32A. I have tried a different chassis (32A) and it still had the same result. I may have a 32B or C laying around at work at one of my other central offices. I will look tomorrow.
I have been on tip and ring and I have taken my butt-set to verify that I have the correct polarity.
I am wondering if I possibly have a bad keypad because I have to move the green wire to kind-of make it work.

If it's the old contact type dial pad, clean the contacts. If it's solid state I wouldn't think that would be the problem.
