Great idea. I got a TS22 that needs fixing. Did you use silcone on the battery holder to keep in place?

While your test set still apart, check also the speaker for any filings or metal debris... just a follow-up

Do the pins on that holder line up with the PC board holes? I know the battery had three pins, that has two that are in line.

And hey Juliard, good you are here. Do you have any ideas about dealing with heavy conformal coatings like they use on those boards? I've been hacking and pulling away at it with an Xacto knife and dental pick to get it off the areas where the pads are. You have to be real careful not to damage any traces though. I know there is some stuff that is supposed to disolve it. I never tried it because I wonder if it will do anything with that heavy stuff or make a mess out of the board.

No Hal, I didnt check the holes since I allready had my leads soldered on from last time I replaced the battery I just soldered those to the holder and glued it in place. Next person who replaces their battery may want to take a peek at that to see if the holder can mount directly to the PCB. That would make for a really clean install!

Yeah, I did check the holders out (the dimensions and pin spacing from the spec sheet). Didn't look like it could be inserted directly in the holes on the board so I never bothered to get one to play with it. Wish they made one with the same configuration as the battery with tabs.
What you did is probably fine, but it does leave a large area where the board is not protected from moisture. Ideally I would want to re-coat the new battery and the area around it where the work was done with new conformal coating. But of course since this is for me I didn't because I would want to get at that battery later.

Hal, I only use Exacto knife to remove the coating, yeah you need lot of patience and steady hand while working on it, Dont forget to use silicone glue after the mod. I've got a lot of success replacing these batteries and repairing speakers with bunch of metal filings on this test sets
