Can anyone point me in the right direction? I’m looking for a service that will allow me to set up a recorded message off site that will allow all our employees to call to get corporate information in the event of unexpected office closures due to weather, power outages etc when our phone switch is not available to do a broadcast voicemail. I called our AT&T rep and he acted as if this has never been done before. Any help is much appreciated.

Well, you could always get a stand-alone line from Verizon that has their Answer Call (voice mail) service on it. They can bring it to your facility, but just don't connect it to anything. That way, any calls will get picked up by the mailbox. It can also receive multiple simultaneous calls.

I currently have a couple unused POTS lines at the facility now. Would it be as simple as requesting this Answer Call service for one of these lines?

Yes, that would be fine. I would make sure to tag that line so that nobody ever tries to use it for something else later on down the line.

Probably so. "Answer" call costs around $10.00 a month. You will also incur a 9.6 cents per call charge (message unit) each time that a call arrives in voice mail. If you aren't going to be using this very much, I'd think that the costs won't be an issue.

You could also use a broadcast service to call employees at home or on cell phones (or both). Pennalert ( www.pennalert.com) is pretty good and quite reasonble. Sam

My switch (Definity G3si) has a "Bulletin Board" available. This is just like a regular mailbox without the ability to accept responses.
The admin. records the message, publishes the number and people can log in and check it but not leave a message.
Make the D-I-D number to the Bulletin Board easy to remember and publish it on your internal telephone list to help people remember it is available.
