hello,
i have a hum on my phone line. i have one at&t 944, at&t portable, vtech portable, on this line. about 6 months ago i had the same hum on the line, and i plugged in a land line directly into the customer interface, and still got the hum, so i figured it was a telco issue. the phone tech that came out that time, said it was the no-name phone, and unplgged it, and the hum did go away. well its back, and the no-name phone hasnt been in use for months. i plugged a phone in the interface outside, and the hum is still there. i am going to call for service, but was wondering, if the phone tech tells me its one of my phones again, should i cut em off at the pass and ask why is the hum still there when i plug a phone into the interface? isnt the idea of unplugging the jack in the interface and plugging in a phone, to disconnect the interface from the inside house wiring?...bob

The AT&T 944 to the best of my knowledge is a 4 line KSU-less telephone, not a 1A2 set. Also, your problem seems to be about hum on the line, not about 1A2 issues. As such you'll probably get a better response here.
Having said that - I would test a plain pots phone someplace else (borrow a neighbors?), making sure that there is no hum on/with it. Then I would unplug all your equipment from the demarc and plug that good, tested phone in. If there is a hum, call for service.
If there is no hum, then it's some piece of your equipment or wiring and you're going to have to start troubleshooting.
Plug everything back in and check for the hum. If it's not there, congratulate yourself and go have a cold one. If it is still there. unplug each piece of equipment one at a time and see if it goes away.
If it doesn't go away, then unplug everything and then plug each phone in to the demarc individually. No hum? Then it's probably your wiring. If it is, let us know and we'll work with you.
Let us know how you do.

hi, thanks all, for ur suggestions! i did call for service, and i did call from the "humming" line, and this is funny. i explained to the rep about my prob with the hum on the line, and she said," excuse me sir, could you pls speak up, there is a loud hum on the line!" a tech came out, and said it was a bad "pair" somewhere down the line (no pun intened), so he switched my line to another pair. when an installer/lineman does that, are they still physically switching to another pair from out in the field and the co? i know many trs ago, it was all done physically...bob

"Excuse me sir, could you pls speak up, there is a loud hum on the line!" Gee lady, Ya think? LOL
With copper pairs yes, there’s still manual cross-connects in the C.O. and cross-boxes in the field.
