hello agian. my customer has a valcom model v-2001 unit. the paging part works but the tone part doesnt work anymore. they have a nortel 824 ksu. i ran the make break pair to a viking pa2a amp to the terms on each side of the spkr terms. and the speaker leads go to the the page input terms on the valcom unit. it works ok, but the pages wont go through. if i unplug the viking amp the page starts working agian. they want paging in the day and loud ringing at night. i plan to put the viking amp on a power strip with a on off switch so they can turn it on at night and off at day. will this do any harm to either unit. thanks agian for all the help i get when im in a fix. dave

If you are using a Viking PA2A, you can probably eliminate the 2001 all together. They both basically do the same thing. The Valcom has a few more features on it and the Viking has a small 2 watt amp built into it to run a horn or two.

This place must have either powered paging speakers or a separate amplifier with spkrs now. Take the 600ohm output from the viking and feed the existing amp or powered speakers. Don't use the last two terminals, these are speaker out (uses the built in amp) which you don't require.

Wire up the page port input and dry contact in from the Viking to the 824.
Program the 824 "night service" to activate the aux ringer and program a button on the reception phone for night ring. No need to do the power strip idea, they will be able to activate it from the recept phone.

The Valcom has a 24volt output aux power supply that is capable of powering some amplified speakers. If this is being used, you will have to leave the 2001 powered up or wire in a 24volt
dc wall wart to replace that supply.

By the way, did you ever just call Valcom tech help to find out why the tones quit working? They are very friendly and helpful there.

ok i did give them a call and he said it sounded like the ring generator was shot. but he did have an interesting idea. try running the ring tones from the viking into the music output. my viking pa2a amp is the old type with only 5 screws and i dont think it has a 600 ohm output. thanks again. dave

You cursed it Dave,
I got a call today to service a V-2001A. The night ringer doesn't work anymore but the weird part on this one is the clock tone still does work.

I shorted out the input terminals with my needle nose pliers and sound on one but not the other. Paging works fine.

I ended up taking it with me and I am going to trace it on the bench because I'm curious.

Will post back on what I find.
