I had a problem with paging on a phone system. I wanted to isolate and test just the paging. It was a Valcom setup where the speakers have 2 pairs (one for talk path and one for 24v) I tried putting my testset on the talk path pair, and got nuthin. How do you test the paging if it is not connected to the phone system.

If you didn't get dialtone from the white/blue pair (Tip & Ring) of the cable attached to P7 in the V-2924A the system is bad. Edited because I didn't see where you didn't get dialtone.

Yes, the toner on the powered speaker Always gets peoples attention... it would be a good idea to warn them first!
Also take your Volt meter and test for 24VAC at the power output for the speakers... may just be a bad power supply.
How many speakers do they have... and how many are you having problems with?
How does the customer interface with the paging system (since you say it doesn't go through the phone system)... is it a single mic?

The customer does page through a phone system. An Avaya IP Office. There is no dial tone on the port, which is normal. I changed ports and that fixed the problem. But what I want to know, is there a way to VOICE test the Paging while NOT connected to the phone system. There is no P7 or V2924-A. Just a 24V power supply.

That type of setup results in fairly high loop current flowing through the port. Paging adapters are designed to limit the current flow so closely mimic the characteristics of a standard CO line. The current setup is probably going to keep blowing ports, and this would likely happen on any system.

I always keep a old Partner ACS control unit on the van for various testing purposes. Comes in handy for many troubleshooting procedures.

Bobby, my assumption was that something like a VP624 is being used to provide battery feed into self-amplified speakers via a series connection. That's a pretty common practice, but it eats CO ports. Depending upon the number of speakers, loop current across the CO port can be drastic.
BlkLabs: You really need to have a formal paging adapter connected between the system's CO port and the paging system or you will continue to have this problem. It's an improper setup. Older systems were much more tolerant of this, but newer systems can't support such trickery. They have built-in tolerance levels so that you will buy more hardware when you make a mistake.

Actually, it's connected to an analog station port. It goes from the analog port to some sort of Viking interface that has a digital clock on it. Periodically, the Viking sends tones over the paging speakers(shift change notifications and such) Then from the Viking, it goes to the talk path pair of the speakers. The Valcom Box is about the size of a 6" cube. I believe this is simply a 24V power supply. Not sure of the model number, but there are just 4 screws to terminate to. Two 24v and two Ground. Thanks for all the input everyone.
