One of my friends asked me about connecting a mic to his stereo receiver at home. It has several sets of RCA line level inputs. I'm not sure if a microphone would work properly on these inputs. I could easily make an RCA L/R to XLR cable, but I think there would be an impedance mismatch. I'm guessing I need some kind of attenuator.
Any thoughts?

Whenever I used microphones on line level inputs they were either specially desdigned for that (Long runs) or we used a matching transformer.

The microphone is, well, mic level. That's much lower than line level so you are going to need a preamp. That RDL is one, there are many others.

If there is a phono input (another low level input)you could use that if you can stand the RIAA equalization that boosts the low end.

It's not an impedance issue.

Hal -

I bow to your wisdom - you're 100%. Going from Mic to Aux and vice versa we used matching transformers. From mic level to line level we used a preamp.

We used Line level inputs on extremely long runs -ones which exceeded the parameters for low impedence microphones.

Thanks Hal, I will take a look at some preamps. We might even have some old stuff at work that my boss could give me.

Don't bow just yet. I used to use 150 ohm to 20K mic input transformers back in the good old tube days.

Jeff, tubes are those glass things that light up inside and get hot.

I have a tube full of toothpaste---and I never saw it light up nor get hot. I'll watch it, though.......
