I've noticed ferrules on the extention amphenol cables from an Executone IDS system...are those used for absorbing rf's?

Usually I'm just asking questions on this message board, but this is one that I can answer. If the ferrules you are referring to are ferrite beads that are placed at one or both ends of a cable, they are there to prevent EMI from emitting out of the cable. In the U.S., they allow a manfacturer's equipment to pass Parts 15 and 68 of FCC regulations. Most equipment will work fine without them but may interfere with other electronic equipment nearby.

This is the long answer to say I agree with nonameyet.
