I ever see the phone installer, they use Butt test set hook up to punch box and dial something, then the Butt set will report each line's phone number.

Can anybody tell me how that work?
Can I do that by my home phone?

I know this is a very stupid question to you guys. But I really want to know the detail.

Thanks for your responds.

Do a search on the site for ANI and you'll find a bunch of number that will do the identification for ya.

But I got a new question... [Linked Image from sundance-communications.com]
Please don't laugh

If I call the ANI numbers, it's that all are free?
If so, what's the benefit for those ANI service provider? Why they give us the service for free? [Linked Image from sundance-communications.com]

that 800 number from MCI isnt an "ANI Service". There are numbers that telephone companies use to get ANI some let you know what they are, some keep them hush hush for whatever reason. here it used to be 959-9673 or 959-9678 in some areas its 611. Differenct Carriers have there own number to ID the lines.

MCI, AT&T and others use ANI to take a human out of the loop, so when they ask, is this the number you are calling about or I see your calling from it's the same principle the automatic number identifiers are using. No they don't cost you if you're using a 800 number, even some of the 1010 numbers don't charge, but to be safe use the 800's
