Greetings All, I have a Comkey 416 system with 4 lines, plus 3 satellite phones, and 2 executive sets with speakerphones.. I also have a 4A speakerphone. Here are my issues: I am in need of advice on how to set up the power for the 2 Exec sets and how to search for the appropriate adapter/connector (I believe 82c) for the 4A to either a master or satellite set. :-)

I never used the 82c connectors. I always punched all the pairs down for each station except the last 2 violet pairs on each Primary station. That's where Mr. Dialtone goes.

As for the 4A speakerphones, I recall something wierd about needing a particular dial. 35 AY instead of 35 AU. Or maybe the othere way around.

Oh and the masters have a thing you flip over so it will be line 1&2 or 3&4.

Have fun!

The 82C connecting block is not relevant to the discussion, nor do you need to change any dials.

However, using the last two pairs from an MDF, for dial tone feeds is non-standard, and causes a reduced power problem to the Satellite sets. The only proper way to feed the dial tones is via the 82 block, which splits the last two pairs towards the Primary set for dial tones, and multiples the last two pairs with the other power pairs, towards the rest of the Satellites, to ensure there is enough copper to power the system.

Back to your original questions:

There are Primary sets and Satellite (or Basic) sets. The Primary sets are powered by 110-volt AC power cords, so there is nothing to "set up."

By "executive" sets, do you mean Primary sets, or do you mean Basic sets that have BIS? (BIS sets are model numbers 983 / 2983 A01) If they don't have AC power cords, then they are not Primary sets, and your system cannot be installed to work, because it's missing the "KSU". Primary sets never have BIS. Primary sets are models 981 / 2981-A01.

QUESTION #1: Do your have one or two of those model numbers?

To install a 4A speakerphone, you need to find the 223C adapter, which comes with a D16H-50 cord. (-50 is ivory) The adapter is simply a base and cover in -49 (light olive gray) that holds the various multi-conductor plugs and connector together. One end of the D16H cord has a small black plug that goes in the phone, and the other end has a connector (female) that resembles a 25-pair Amphenol, but it is keyed to accept a power plug from the 85A1 transformer, and the cords from the two parts of the 4A speakerphone.

You can only install a 4A speakerphone set on a 983 / 2983-A02 set. These are Basic sets that are factory equipped with HFAI (Hands Free Answer on Intercom) feature. If you are unsure if your phone will accept a 4A speakerphone, look at the interconnect field, and at the top left will be a space marked "SPEAKERPHONE." If there are pins in the socket, then a 4A will work. If the socket does not have pins, your are out of luck.

The D16H cord plugs into the interconnect field in that space marked "SPEAKERPHONE" There are also shorting bars that must be removed and a relay board that has to be installed for proper operation. In addition, you need to place a plastic button stop under the SPKR button on the 10-button line key to prevent its operation. (If operated, it would compete with the operation of the 4A)

The kit of parts (D-180732) that provides all the cords and adapter pieces is made of unobtainium.

QUESTION #2: Do you have the 223C adapter, relay, and cord?

Hope this helps. Let us know the answers to what type of sets you have, and whether you are in possession of the Kit of Parts, and we'll continue the conversation.

It would probably be a good idea if you were to refer to BSP 518-450-106 which can be found in any of the Key System Service Manuals, Vol. III, from 1980 onward.

Thank you, Mr. Bloom. My units are in storage pending a residential move. I will post again with exact parts that I do have. I can answer some now, however. I have 2 primary sets.. One is set for Lines 1 & 2 and one is set for Lines 3 & 4. I have a total of 4 basic sets, but I'm not sure which versions they are. Of those, 3 are equipped with the privacy feature, but I'm unsure if they have the pins you mentioned regarding speakerphone capability. The 4A set I got came only with a raw transformer for power with 2 terminals, not the cord that plugs in between the transmitter and the speaker. The two which I called Executive are the Basic Sets with BIS and I'm aware that they won't support the 4A. My only issue with those is I have the separate power transformers for those as well, I just need to know where to wire them in.. :-) Thanks for your time.. I will post the Basic Set Part numbers shortly when I complete my move... Cheers and Merry Christmas if I don't post before then.
