Ok...here I go..
I hooked up laptop to IDS-42, got a substantial amount of garbled mess on screen...my conclusion: rs232 port going out. Tried same laptop on IDS-108..that was interfacing fine at last attempt with laptop a while back...got garbled mess on that too. Tried DESKTOP pc (also w/procomm) on 108.. got same garbled mess...tried desktop on 42...same garbled mess. Only theory I can come up with is that the faulty rs232 on 42 damaged laptop comm port...then when hooked up (now damaged laptop comm port) to 108 it damaged 108 rs232...hence the garbled mess I'm now getting hooked up to it using DESKTOP pc to it. Any input...counter theorys???
I know these IDS's will damage comm ports if you power up pc while hooked up to them.

Possible cable issue? I'd get me an inexpensive breakout box and verify cable or buy/make a new one. Also check your com port settings are they correct on the PC's? How about in the IDS? 8-N-1 1200 baud? Also once connected do a hard reset and see what happens.

try to use port one or two and try to use different speeds. make sure your settings are tvi920 or so, xmodem, speed normaly is 9600 but when backing up do it always at 4800 unless you have an ACPU. check that the cable is pushed in the backplane.
Executone super tech.

Try a usb to serial adapter. I had a system burn my serial port about a year ago. swore up and down that the cpu was bad.
If you can read this, you're in range.

You may also want to try other baud rates - unless you're SURE that that the baud rate of IDS is 9600. Also - if port is configured as an operator terminal - you'll get a brief blast of IOT terminal screen then garbage.
You know that hyperterminal won't work. MUST emulate a TVI 920 or 950 terminal.

I/O protectors in line with I/O ports may have shorted MOV's to ground that can cause adverse damage to UART's in serial drivers. If unsure of the state, by pass protector before hooking up laptop.
