I have done a few for the Feds and the state and Mark is right , run away from it they want you to jump through hoops and then pay 4-6 months later if your lucky.

When I was in Baltimore, I did a big wiring job for the Parks Division and I got paid within 30 days.

Your lucky, we helped a friend with some fiber and networking up in the Califonia national parks and it took them almost a year to pay him.

The reason I ask is I understand that there have been some laws passed to make local divisions work with small businesses in the area within 100 miles. We do a national battlefield under this program and the best thing so far is that they pay with a government credit card. No bids required for relativel large jobs. We get paid the day we do the work. I'm just getting my feet wet with this. I'll keep you posted.

I did a couple of jobs at the
Great Lakes Navy Base by North Chicago, IL.
I didn't have any trouble getting paid but you do have to pay prevailing wage and they retain the right to aduit your payroll and interview any employees to make sure they are receiving prevailing wage. That's basicly union scale whether your union or not.
Often the job or "scope of work" will be laid out by the army core of engineers and/or dictated by a 3rd party consultant.
Booze & Allen do a lot of consulting for the Fed. Gov.
I really don't miss them but I did look at some alarm and Lan & phone cabling work at the local VA hospital last month. It takes them forever to make a decision.

At least 50-60% of my PBX installations are Federal Gov't. Y2K and the formation of DHS after 9/11 resulted in a huge increase in our installed base. The feds pay 45-60 days usually. Small stuff within 30-45 day on a bank card. Anything with Fed gov't is good work if you can get it.

If you are a vet ---- the VA and the military give you preference ---- If you are a DVBE (Disabled Vet) you are a minority and get in ahead of the regular vets. Then comes everyone else. This can help in Fed, state, local minority quotas.
Check with your local veteran service organizations for more info.

we've done some work with a Homeland Security office in Altoona and they've always paid with a credit card or check as soon as we were done with the job
