What's the cheapest you guy's would do to run a voice (cat 3) and data (cat 5) per location?
I'm guessing about 140 per location (That's two wires)

I am running a special in Dallas right now of 1 CAT 3 and 1 CAT 5e Plenum cable run for $80. Under 100'. Of course I will just break even on these, but it should bring in alot of new customers. Normal rate is $120 for same run. But have to compete against the guys running out of the back of a truck. ------------------ Voice and Data Cabling in DFW, [email protected] https://www.dnrcomm.com [This message has been edited by DnRComm (edited March 12, 2005).]

I never would give prices for "combination runs" ie: 1 CAT 3 and 1 CAT 5e. Prices should always be per run. If you do 1 CAT 3 and 1 CAT 5e for say $100 customer is going to want those single runs for a wall phones to cost him $50. Also, what about back to back or runs that are in close proximity to each other?
Once you establish that you consider combinations by pricing like this it opens the door for all kinds of concessions and dickering and you can wind up losing your shirt.
Better way is to price per run no matter whether it is CAT 3 or 5, two to a location or 100 to a location. That's the way we do it and the way most other contractors I've talked to do it. Also makes it easier to price.

So you charge the same price for a dual CAT 3 cable run as you do for a dual CAT 5e cable run? Now considering the additional cost of cable, and jacks, that does not seem like it would work. ------------------ Voice and Data Cabling in DFW, [email protected]https://www.dnrcomm.com

Your "per run" charge is not fixed and depends on the type of construction and installation requirements as well as material costs and all the other variables. You figure these as usual but you only give the customer a cost per run.
This wouldn't work for complex jobs like where there may be cable trays, conduit, raceway etc. but for the run of the mill stuff within a office environment where all runs are pretty much the same it's the way to go. You can just look at a job and be able to give the customer a price depending on the degree of difficulty.

I wouldn't drop my prices for those yahoo's. Think about it let's just base this on 10 drops. They only save $400. For a company, that relies on their voice and data. That $400 gives them peace of mind. My clients understand I HAVE to make money so I can be here tommorrow to service and support them. IMHO, If you drop your prices, YOU BECOME the YAHOO.
