I've been at it for the last 2 days with no results. All I want is to grab my cell-phone, connect to my laptop via USB, and with the use of hyperterminal, send it some AT commands for example to send sms. I can't manage to do this. I have 3 t-mobile cell-phones to try with: a Blackberry, a MyTouch and an HTC HD2. I tried Win XP and Ubuntu. I tried USB cable and I also tried bluetooth. I can't find a USB/modem driver for any of these phones to create a com port to talk to with my hyperterminal. The Blackberry got close with the USB, I managed to send commands to it, but all the repsponses were "OK", even to my bogus commands. The HTC HD2 gave me some "OK" and some "error" responses, no matter what I sent to it, but never sent any sms. And it only worked with bluetooth. From any article I've read, it seems to be the simplest thing of the universe. But all those articles were written in 2007 and were using some Nokia phones, not smart-phones. Can anybody give me some advice on how to do this? I don't want some pre-made program with GUI to send sms via a USB connected cell-phones. I want to send my own commands so I can fully control the communication myself.

I know exactly what you are saying. I've found that by default, these 'modems' don't echo commands back, so you have to preface the session with ATE1Q0. After that, I'm able to receive feedback.
I have found that at least with Verizon Wireless, some netbook modems will allow full AT interaction, while others will only allow calls to 777. Any other call attempts result in error.

So, that brought me one step closer. I'm working with the HTC and have a bluetooth connection. I can type AT commands and can get a reply OK. But I can't get any decent function to be performed. For example, AT+CMGF=1 <ENTER> gets me an "ok" response (this should put the phone in sms text mode). Then I type AT+CMGS="nxxnxxxxxxx" <ENTER>. Instead of it giving me a prompt for the text message, it again replies with "ok". But I'm supposed to be able type in my message, press crtl+z and it should attempt to send. But I can't even get this far. So, I'm stuck at this point. Any further advice?

SOLVED!!! While the advice of using ATE1Q0 to get some replies back was useful, eventually I dug up one of my old Motorola Razr phones, went to Motorola web-site, downloaded the USB driver, and got the comm port I was looking for all along. I gave it AT commands, it replied back they way I expected and I sent a bunch of sms out already. Thank you for your help.

Dangit, I'm sorry for not responding to your PM earlier. I've got a great piece of software to do just what you're asking about, but I've been short on bandwidth. Glad you're there.

Why do you want to send SMS from your laptop via your phone? I don't see any advantage to this at all, so I am curious as to what you are trying to acheive?

phadob29, can you share the commands that you ended up using? Z-man, it would be handy to use for monitoring notification. Difficult to send emails when the internet connection is down.
