I work for a reseller and we cannot get quality audio on the Basic Voice Mail or on analog PSTN service on the 5000. T-1 calls are fine and the stand-alone VPU or EM servers sound fine as well. Inter-Tel seems baffled and claims they have well over 1000 systems installed and no-one is complaining of this problem, which we find impossible. The audio on incoming and outgoing analog loop trunks is really poor. Anyone out there had success w/ this product in that environment?

We are also a reseller and have experienced the same issue. Voicemail sounded poor on a stand alone network on our bench. Didn't get any better on the customers site. Small system with 4 POTS lines.
We were told by Inter-tel support to adjust the gain to help with voice quality.

"If you are experiencing Echo while using LS lines adjust the Tx / Rx Gain on each LS trunk.
First adjust the Gain from default of +3 down to 0. If they still have echo, step the gain down to -3, and so on until it sounds better.
There is no set setting for the Hybrid Balance, so if they continue to have Echo after adjusting the Gain settings, start to play with the Hybrid Balance.

+ Gain = More of a chance for echo
- Gain = Lesser chance of echo

Adjusting the gain will also make a difference in the volume, so you may have to find a happy medium."

We adjusted tooooo far at first and that killed the volume.
It isn't great voice quality (not what we have come to expect from Inter-tel), but it is better than cell phone quality.
